Last of the Dream Sequence Scripts

Monday, September 14th, 2009

This is the final phase for my Dream Set. The set is for an exhibition that will take place this Saturday, September 19th at Pershing Square in Downtown LA. This phase is based on the computers that read your heart pulse and the Joy Division poster/t-shirt. I was hard pressed to use a Joy Division song, but I didn’t want to emulate it exactly so I decided with the new and hip The xx — hope to see you Saturday! For more info. on our structure check out our recent flickr set. For some reason the compression on the smaller video sizes makes for odd video. Please check the full screen or NOT HD version out to see the effect.

Phases 4 and 5 are beginning to surface in Processing.org

Transitions / Content

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

So to reiterate… we are definitely finding some interesting tangents on the dream studies. Refer to this.

We talked about camera movements and mixing through software as means to transition to the different sleep phases, so we can clearly supplement our dream content. Examples would be slow panning to match the low frequency Delta waves during phase 4, etc. The possibilities for transitions are quite endless, including fading the video images, etc.

Onto another topic relating to content, I think I am going to try compile some image sequence of of black and white photography, but very high contrast. I will refine this a bit more soon, but I saw a good example of b+w image sequences during The Cult’s recent concert at Club Nokia and I think I can come up with something similar that will work for our surface.

On another note, Dead Can Dance have a music video for “The Carnival is Over” (1993) that is like a combination of the John Whitney videos in Jono’s post, mixed with some weird carnival imagery softly composited in a dream-like aesthetic. It’s a bit dated and unfortunately looks a little too Cirque-de-Soleil for my tastes, but there is some qualities worth taking into account.

Shane’s Sketch for Phillip

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Sorry guys for the lack of posts from me, trying to play catch-up tonight (whatever I can post in an hour). Anyways, included in this post is the sketch I handed to Phil.  I’m not set on the shape of the structure I sketched, as I would prefer something of more of a pyramid shape. In terms of scale and material I think it is suitable representation of what I had in mind. Obviously, after we had our meeting, I agree on the idea we discussed about a two-facet structure with clothe / fabric as the surface.

My Shape for Phillip

dreamssetupThese are the two general ideas that I had in my head while we were talking over the meeting today. Aside from this there are my other sketches below.inspirationinspiration2inspiration3inspiration4inspiration5inspiration6

Computers Don’t Dream of Flying Toasters

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

This is the type of dream content (somewhere in between the mass of these that would analyze either the music we have or the noise outside) I would like to make through a processing sketch—

Dreams, and things related, according to Carl Jung

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

(a mandala by Jung)

“With mentally ill patients there exists in the background a person that is ‘normal’ – this normal personality can make sensible remarks by way of dreams”

Psyche: half of the world which comes into existence only when we become conscious of it

sine qua non (in relation to dreams/dreaming): analysis of the analyst; analysis of the dreamer/viewer through their analysis of the dream. analysis of the subject through his analysis of the object

Dreams are compensations for the conscious attitude

Collective unconscious – “sympathy of all things”
